Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) is not just about treating sporting injuries but helping people to remain active despite injury or illness, at any age and from all walks of life.
SEM is made up of three elements:
- Exercise as a way to improve health
- Exercise as treatment for illness
- Treatment of injuries from sport
SEM Physicians are trained to diagnose and manage injury in those who participate in physical activity, and to target physical activity to improve chronic disease. They offer unique and specific skills in the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal, soft tissue and sport injuries.
SEM has been provided in the UK for over fifty years but it wasn’t until the awarding of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games that it was confirmed as a medical specialty by an act of Parliament. For further information on the specialty see the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine website.
