Sportswise physio Paul Aston took part in the British Life Saving Sport Surf Championships 2014 at Saunton Sands in August, competing in the open surf swim, board race and board rescue.
Paul started competing in Surf Lifesaving after leaving swimming behind in his late teens / early 20’s. He spent a season in Australia training and was picked for the GB Squad on returning to the UK. Now a few years may have passed by since then but in January of this year he decided it was time to return to the pool ‘dust down my board’ with the aim of returning in the summer……’
His verdict on the experience was as follows: “No placing in the top fifteen, a broken toe (confirmed on ultrasound by Nick) and a dented ego.” Despite this he didn’t do too badly and we understand he might be looking to the Masters competition for the future.
Another member of the Sportswise team setting new sporting goals is Maryke Louw. In September Maryke tackled her first triathlon event – the Chichester middle distance triathlon. In the days leading up to the event Maryke wasn’t sure how she would cope with the 750m lapped swim, challenging 20km cycle and 5km mixed terrain run, but not only did she complete the event but afterwards found herself, in her words, “in not nearly as bad a state as I thought.”
