Maryke Louw BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy, MSc Sports Injury Management, MCSP Registered with HPC – Physiotherapist
Maryke qualified with an honours degree in Physiotherapy in 2003 from the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. She spent the first few years building a solid knowledge base in orthopaedics and musculoskeletal physiotherapy through working in various hospital and private practice settings, both in the UK and South Africa.
She returned to the UK in 2010 and completed an MSc in Sports Injury Management at the University of Brighton. Her sports experience includes volunteering at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, working with the Brighton and Hove Albion FC Academy and various rugby teams in East Sussex.
Maryke told us this about her interests:
Which aspects of physiotherapy interest you especially?
There isn’t one specific joint or area of the body that I enjoy treating more than others. My favourite part is trying to work out the right combination of rest and activity to enable a person’s injury to heal while they remain as active as possible.
What are your sporting interests?
I am a massive rugby fan but enjoy watching most sports. I have always enjoyed running and have recently added cycling and swimming to the list.
What attracted you to Eastbourne and working at Sportswise?
I first came to Eastbourne when I applied to do my MSc at the University of Brighton. I remember that their website claimed that Eastbourne gets the most sunshine in the UK. It was later pointed out to me that that doesn’t necessarily mean that there will be sunshine!
As luck would have it a position opened up at Sportswise just as I finished my studies. The practice’s reputation was well known so I jumped at the opportunity.
What do you like doing when you are not working?
I don’t do well with sitting still. My time is mostly divided between travelling, sport and friends. We love running on the Downs at the weekends.
